Feature Film: Graceful Decline, by Guadalupe Yepes

E51a25ecd9 posterThe film dwells on the decline of Claudia (43), an aristocratic woman, during 1977, amidst the coup d’état in Argentina.
For years, Claudia has endured a violent relationship with her husband Carlos (55), a powerful businessman linked to the navy and to American entrepreneurs.
Their marriage falls apart, daily life becomes untenable and their sexual life turns frustrating, partly due to Carlos’ impotence.
Desperately trying to to get out of her bourgeois bubble and trapped in her desire for motherhood, Claudia will start a sexual and affectionate relationship with Gervasio (50), a horse-keeper, who has recently joined the equestrian club she frequents.
Hector (40), ship lieutenant, Carlos’ friend and business partner in some of his enterprises, becomes obsessed with Claudia. Upon Hector’s spying on Claudia, he discovers her affair with Gervasio and bribes her by sexually harassing her.
Terrified to lose his wife, Carlos will try to please Claudia by promising to help her become a mother, no matter what. With the help of Hector and without Claudia’s knowledge, Carlos decides to seize a baby who is about to be born in ESMA (army building, which served as a clandestine centre for detention, torture and extermination during the coup d’état).
Claudia unintentionally unfolds her husband’s arrangement, realizes the danger involved and tries to take refuge in Gervasio, who is not simply a horse-keeper, but an undercover member of the E.R.P. (Argentine guerrilla organization, of Trotskyist origin, who fought against the coup d’état). Gervasio is performing espionage on the military men who attend the equestrian club.
Mistakenly suspecting that Claudia is tricking him with Hector, Carlos sets a trap for them.
Now, Claudia must overcome the unravelling of a threatening future.

Feature Film: MANN, by Johnny Aangraj

A4ba1f0ba0 posterOne liner- This is a story about a writer and his journey of how he wins over his three layers of soul- Mind, Intellect and Ego(Ego- character of Ritesh himself), to make a film on his own written story. So the story is about the conflict between MIND (MANN), INTELLECT (BUDDHI) and EGO(AHANKAR).
Sense: Earth, water, fire, air, ether, mind, intellect(brain) and ego – Thus it is my nature divided by eight. These eight elements are the ones which were used in the creation of universe are actually my different nature (power).
These eight elements are actually my inferior nature (qualities). O Colossal-Armed! Barring these, the finest face of my power is the life force (soul), which holds the whole universe.

Plot- Story begins with a prologue in which we see a guy- Ritesh ( 27years), filming a video from mobile of himself. He is talking about coming suicide in easier ways. He is drinking beer, smoking cigarette and eating pasta simultaneously. And finally he actually commits suicide.

The story is being narrated by two guys with same face. One is Ritesh’s MANN (Mind) and second in female attire is Ritesh’s BUDDHI (Brain/Intellect). They briefly introduce themselves and start narrating the story.
Four years ago- A writer Ritesh is narrating his script to a producer. He is visibly nervous. MIND (MANN) is sitting beneath the table scared and biting his nails while Intellect (BUDDHI) is sleeping outside on the staircase. The producer first makes fun of him and then advices him to watch more movies of same genre and work more on his script.
Disappointed, Ritesh leaves from the place. On the way back, Ritesh’s MIND (MANN) and INTELLECT (BUDDHI) fills him with negative thoughts- They tell him it was a bad decision to drop from engineering and become a writer/director, he is good for nothing and a day will come when he will be left with nothing. Suddenly his phone rings, it was Deepak’s call. Deepak (28) is his best friend and an actor by profession. He encourages him to work on his script and he begins to write again.
Ritesh is sitting in his room in front of his laptop and writing a line in his final draft- “Inspector is having tea with the writer…” As soon as he write this, all three of his main character – Inspector, writer and sub- inspector (which are actually the character of Ritesh), starting fighting among themselves and Ritesh is not able to concentrate on writing. Suddenly he hears someone else crying loudly. He switches of his room’s light and goes to another room near the window to listen clearly. MIND (MANN) goes Closer to Ritesh and tells him that this voice is coming from the flat of that beautiful girl whom you encounter often on the stairs with her friend. Ritesh starts to leave the room and notices a body of a person tied mercilessly with chain bound on a chair on the far end of the room. The body is covered with a white sheet. INTELLECT (BUDDHI) is sleeping on a nearby couch. Actually that covered body is Soul (AATMA).
Next day when Ritesh was climbing up the stairs towards his room, he notices that beautiful girl, Alisha(24) and her friend Neha(24). Mind(MANN) encourages him to talk to them and he gathers courage to invite them for tea at his place. Both the girls accept the invitation and come to his place but when returns back with tea, He notices Alisha has left. Neha informs him that Alisha’s family would get angry if she stayed longer hence she left. He also get to know through Neha that Alisha has interest in acting.
After a few days, Ritesh receives a call from his friend who happens to be a Casting Director. He informs him that he is looking for a beautiful face as an actress. Ritesh immediately calls Neha and asks him to inform Alisha about this. He tells her to call the casting director and give him his reference. Alisha get the project. She personally calls Ritesh to thank him. They finally meet and Ritesh enquires about the frequent reason of her crying. He tells her that he has over heard her crying many times. Is it her mom dad quarrelling or… Alisha interrupts him and tells him that it’s not her dad; it’s her husband’s. Ritesh is shocked by this revelation.
MIND (MANN) and INTELLECT (BUDDHI) take the story further. There are several conflicts between Mind and Intellect and they are seen having arguments. We get to know the difference between MIND (MANN) and INTELLECT (BUDDHI). Apart from these, both of them also keep distracting Ritesh and advise him in different spheres of life. They take the story of Ritesh further and tell-
Ritesh and Alisha have become friends now. They’ve started to talk regularly. Ritesh has build up his imagination and expectation to unrealistic level and hence gets frustrated when his expectations are not met or any petty issues like if she fails to reply to his messages promptly. But also when she does reply to his message he gets too excited at the same time. Although his INTELLECT (BUDDHI) knew that these things are common in love however, his MIND (MANN) ruled over Ritesh right now. Hence he ignored whatever his INTELLECT (BUDDHI) would chip in. Over the period of time INTELLECT (BUDDHI) falls ill due to being left out and ignored.
The drama of love begins to play between Ritesh and Alisha. MIND (MANN) was continuously with Alisha although Ritesh could hardly meet her once or twice in the whole month. Few months passed and about a year later, INTELLECT (BUDDHI) comes out of the room all of a sudden. INTELLECT (BUDDHI) makes him realize that Ritesh is simply wasting his time. Also, on the same day Ritesh had seen a picture of Alisha in which she has hugged a guy too closely in pub. This is the same guy about whom Alisha used to talk a lot. Ritesh knew that Alisha loved her but MIND (MANN) always used to convince him that she loves him too. So to concentrate on his work, Ritesh blocks Alisha. But when he began writing again all his three main characters who are in different getup but are actually Ritesh come in front of him. One of the guy says- “I’m having a cup of tea since a year, can I get done with it!.. Ritesh concentrates hard to focus on writing but his Mind interrupts him again and again and starts with his own rants and he could not complete his story. The same night INTELLECT (BUDDHI) advices him to go meet Alisha and tell her clearly that he is not going to meet her or talk to her anymore. Ritesh likes her advice.
Next time when Alisha comes to meet Ritesh, he tells her that he cannot continue to talk and meet her anymore. Coincidently, on the same day Alisha had had a fight with her boyfriend and when Ritesh also tell her to move on, Alisha broke down. Ritesh’s MIND (MANN) also starts crying. Gauging the situation, INTELLECT (BUDDHI) come to the conclusion that it is not right to hurt someone. She tells Ritesh that love might not always be reciprocated. It means the happiness of your loved one. It’s not her problem that you are always troubled because of her; it’s your own created problem. If you’ll ignore and hurt Alisha now, you won’t be able to forgive yourself. This hurts Ritesh(Ego), and he apologizes to Alisha.
After few days, Alisha proposes Ritesh. MIND (MANN) and INTELLECT (BUDDHI) were both present there. Hearing Alisha’s proposal, MIND (MANN) quickly escapes and INTELLECT (BUDDHI) tells him that he himself is not settled. First he should do something in life, or atleast make his first film and then get married. Ritesh explains this to Alisha and convinces her too.
Now Ritesh finally concentrates on work. But slowly Alisha has started to pick faults in Ritesh. He is not able to devote so much time to her due to his devotion towards story and also he is not financially stable. These things are bothering Alisha. She starts to distance herself.
One fine day Alisha leaves for an outdoor shoot. After few days one of her friend calls Ritesh saying that he wanted to Cast Alisha in an Ad film but her phone is not reachable. Ritesh tries to contact her too but every effort went in vain. Finally he goes to Alisha’s house with her friend Neha. He gets to know that the family has shifted four months back. Ritesh gets very disturbed. Few months pass like this in agility. In all this chaos , the only positive thing that happened is that the script has shaped up beautifully. Ritesh tries to pitch his story again but still he is not receiving any positive response. Frustrated, he goes back to work again in TV but he is not getting any job there too. Ritesh gathers himself and because he had to survive this battle and didn’t wanted to take money from home, he starts working in a flower shop.
Suddenly one day Ritesh sees a YouTube link that shows news of Alisha’s suicide. The news suggests that she committed suicide because she had a fight with her boyfriend who happened to be a producer. This is the same guy Alisha used to talk about with Ritesh. Ritesh is heartbroken to hear the news. He cannot bear the fact that the girl he had loved so deeply has committed suicide because of some other guy she loved. Ritesh attempts suicide too but is luckily been saved. (The prologue part)
Deepak comes to visit Ritesh and consoles him. He asks him to be strong in adverse situation. The same night MIND (MANN) and INTELLECT (BUDDHI) again start ranting in front of him and reminds him of Alisha’s betrayal and suicide. But now Ritesh has grown strong, he pays no heed to both of them. He gets up and thrashes both of them and when he gets tired he goes upto the another room where a PERSON (AATMA) is bound to a chair with chain and ropes and covered in white sheet. He removes the sheet from her and unties the rope. A gleaming self of Ritesh is smiling at him- He is the Soul of Ritesh.
This is the truth of life that every coin has two faces. We receive both happiness and sadness in equal amount. After a few months of this incidence, suddenly Ritesh found someone to produce his film. The flower shop in which Ritesh used to work belonged to a girl who married a big film corporate guy. That girl treated Ritesh as his younger brother and decided to produce his film. Finally Ritesh got the chance to direct his first film.
Epilogue- Ritesh is sitting by his window, smoking cigarette, lost in his thoughts. Right behind him, MIND (MANN) and INTELLECT (BUDDHI) are sitting quietly. Just then, we see from the outside of his flat two different MINDS starts to crawl upwards towards Ritesh’s window using pipe. As soon as one of them reaches Ritesh’s window, Ritesh’s phone rang. It displays- “Pranjulaa Actress.” Ritesh gets in a fix and couldn’t decide what to do. Just then the other Mind nudges him and tells him to receive the call. He tells him not to think too much, the call must be to invite him for dinner and he should pick the call as the girl is good, lovely, caring & beautiful and also belongs to his field. Ritesh gets convinced and receives the call.
From the another window of the next room the other Mind reaches there. Slowly he goes back to SOUL (RITESH), who is meditating, & begins tying him to the chair.

In the Last Black Screen we see a dialogue of Ravindranath Tagore from one of his Short Story (Post Master) –
(Oh unintelligent human mind! Your confusion never disappears somehow. Logical reasoning enters the brain quite late often. Ignoring larger-than-large evidence, you stick to your false hope and even confidence. And finally a day comes when they shatter massively cutting through all your nerves, sucking every drop of blood from your heart and leaving you miserable. But again as soon as senses return to your mind you become desperate to be tied into the trap of another fallacy.)

THE END

Short Film: BUMP, by Julia Perri

82773fefeb posterA short yet powerful story, a story which is so incredibly close to the truth of what is  happening not only in Italy and Europe, but the entire world. A young Italian couple, madly in love, obsessed with excitement and fear, resort to pickpocketing as a means of survival.
The story takes place on the streets of Sardinia, there are elements of humor, love, drama, many thrilling moments, and of course pure heart.

Shoplifters and pickpockets operate in different emotional weather than more brazen  thieves. They do not use strength, but stealth. Their thefts are intimate violations of the  property of others; to succeed, they must either remain invisible or inspire trust.  We are introduced to Antonio and Giulia, a young Italian couple living on the island of  Sardinia in Italy. Obsessed with excitement and fear, we experience 24 hours in the life of this couple. They are attractive, well-dressed, even elegant, charming and magnetic, but they can also disappear into the crowd in a matter of seconds. They are masters of  camouflage.

During 24 hours with this couple, we learn that Antonio and Giulia are in fact good  Samaritans who open their hearts and help anyone they “bump” into who are in need of  assistance. An evening where the intention was to have a fun night out, turns into a rather busy evening to say the least, as they happen to be at the right place at the right time to help various people on the streets of Sassari. From helping a frustrated man on his cell phone, to rescuing two women from a thief trying to snatch their handbags, as well as an Italian-American english professor who is lonely and a bit lost after having a few too many drinks.
The way Antonio and Giulia help these victims is not only humbling and moving, but also intriguing and fun, even stimulating. Antonio and Giulia guide these various people to safety, but what is never revealed to us in their eyes, is the ecstasy of 2 people who  surrender to their compulsion. They have the audience in the palm of their hand fooling us into believing they are 2 good hearted souls, but what we must remember is yin and yang… there is a little bit of bad in the good and a little bit of good in the bad. Nothing is ever truly what it seems.
Antonio and Giulia take us on a journey, following every move they make, every person  they meet and every moment they live. Until the shocking revelation comes when the night is over and the sun has risen … a turning point that will leave you stunned and in disbelief, some may feel bewildered, some may feel intrigued, definitely moved, perhaps shocked and surprised, even excited. Whatever it is that is felt … Antonio and Giulia will leave a kind of mark on your heart.

Writer Statement

“Bump” or “Lo Scontro” is a short film written by Julia Perri. Originally written in english to shoot
in Melbourne, she then rewrote an Italian version when she moved to Sardinia Italy. Julia was so
incredibly inspired by the Island that she rewrote the story in Italian and decided to shoot the film
in Italy. Frank Renzulli, writer (Emmy nominated and Golden Globe winner), is a mentor of Julia’s,
and has helped Julia to express her idea through the script writing process.
Julia is most inspired by the Italian greats, Fellini, De Sica, Rossellini…for her their films are like a
treasure trove: you open it up and find yourself faced with a world of marvels, provincial and
universal, real and fantastic. They are great maestros who are beacons that lead us into port.
Frank Renzulli has seen the film flourish from a simple Idea in Julia’s mind, to this short yet
powerful and shocking script that has attracted attention from such talent as – director Saverio Di
Biagio (La Ragazza Dei Miei Sogni, Gomorra etc), who is now attached to the project as the
Director. Saverio is from Rome Italy, and is such a hard working director who has written and
directed a number of award winning films, as well as worked as first assistant director on films and

International Film Festival, Los Angeles Film Festival etc. Over the years he has collaborated with
such Italian cinema notables as Maurizio Sciarra, Wilma Labate and Daniele Vicari. Julia is truly
excited to have him on board as the director.

Writer Statement

Although I was born in the Buddhist country: Thailand, I became interested in Buddhism only recently, when a crisis struck. Having been an atheist for a long time, I fell hard and shook to the reality when facing a simple truth about life: impermanence and sufferings.

I renounced my career to travel to India, Bhutan, Nepal, Myanmar and Thailand in search for Buddhist teachings. Over those years, I have learned so much and wanted to share my knowledge with western audiences.

The fact that I am an east-meets-west person, an American/Asian makes me perfectly qualified to craft this screenplay about Buddhism and Buddha for western audiences.

I hope you find this screenplay entertaining and inspiring.
