Novel Video Pitch: Darkness Dreams, by Melissa R. Mendelson

Get to know the writer:

What is your story about?

Darkness Dreams is a mysterious, dark ride, where one awakes in the past and realizes that they are trapped there, but they hear a voice trying to pull them back into the present. The only problem is that something bad happened to them in the present, and pieces of that moment are finding their way back into the past. And it’s a race against time between them escaping the past and fighting the darkness that is closing in.

Why should people know this story?

This past week, I was working with someone, who at every chance was reaching back for their James Patterson book because they were so enthralled with the story that they needed to return to it, and my father, who just bought another David Baldacci book on audio, kept looking for every chance to jump into his car to return to that story. And it is that pull that I am looking for myself to create, wanting my readers to connect to my characters and wonder and worry about what fate awaits them.

This story has a lot going for it. How would you describe this story in two words?

No Assumptions

What movie have you seen the most in your life?

I have seen A LOT of movies in my life because if I’m not reading, I’m watching movies, and one of my favorites is the movie, Stay. You think you know what’s going on, but then reality blends into fiction, taking you on a wild ride right until the end. This was the movie, where I knew that Ryan Gosling was going to be a great actor.

How long have you been working on this story?

I have drafted out this novel, and I am just starting the first few chapters.

How many stories have you written?

I have lost count of how many short stories I have written and had published by e-zines like Gadfly Online and Antarctica Journal News, and I have written at least four novellas. Novels are something new for me, and I had just finished writing my first one, Lizardian. Darkness Dreams will be my second novel.

What motivated you to write this story?

I love writing Horror and Science-Fiction, but this story will be different. It will be dark and mysterious, but it will also be dramatic, which is a new genre for me.

Apart from writing, what else are you passionate about?

When I’m not writing, I am driving around the countryside, taking photographs. I love taking pictures of the scenery and of old things, and I post a lot of it on Fine Art America.

Any advice or tips you’d like to pass on to other writers?

Don’t limit yourself to one thing. If you’re a writer, it doesn’t mean that you can’t be a photographer. If you’re a singer, it doesn’t mean that you can’t be a poet. We can be anything and everything that we want to be.
